Sealants

woman being treated at Weekend Dentistry, San Antonio, TXSealants, sometimes called “dental sealants,” are a plastic coating placed on the chewing surface of molars, premolars, or any deep grooves on your teeth to prevent decay. These deep grooves also called pits or fissures, are often difficult to reach. Even the most meticulous brushers and flossers are bound to miss something. Food particles, plaque, and decay may make themselves comfortable in these deep grooves and lead to further concerns for your smile. We at Weekend Dentistry recommend sealants to protect these deep grooves in your natural teeth to maintain your oral health and create a smooth cleaning surface.

Why Are Sealants Applied to Teeth?

The chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars) have deep grooves that leave them vulnerable to decay. These fissures can be incredibly narrow and hard to clean, sometimes even smaller than a single bristle on your toothbrush. Food particles and plaque can accumulate here, where the acid in the plague attacks your enamel and leaves you vulnerable to cavities. Sealants are an effective and elegant preventative measure, so your teeth stay strong and healthy against decay.

Who Should Get Sealants?

Dental sealants are a great way to protect a child’s teeth from decay as they grow up. Dental sealants are usually applied to the first permanent teeth that come in for children, once the tooth has erupted completely beyond the gum. The dental sealant helps protect the natural tooth and keep it pristine. Molars continue to come in until around age thirteen so S. Bin Kim, MS, DDS, PLLC may recommend sealants for each molar to protect the biting surface.

Adults may also benefit from sealants. We at Weekend Dentistry are happy to provide sealants for adults at risk for cavities, with deep grooves in their teeth that do not already have fillings or sealants. If necessary, we can also place new dental sealants on a tooth that may have already had this treatment.

Your Sealant Appointment

Dental sealants are a painless and relatively quick procedure. Applying a sealant to one tooth usually only takes a few minutes with one of our expert staff. Depending on the number of teeth sealed, the procedure should only take one visit to our San Antonio, TX office. We’ll thoroughly clean and dry the intended tooth before applying a solution to the tooth for a few seconds. This solution is acidic and creates a better surface area for the sealant to attach to your tooth. Once the tooth is dry again, we’ll apply the sealant. Depending on the kind of sealant, it will either be dried with a light or dry naturally if it is a two-component dental sealant. Once hardened, your sealant will behave just like your natural tooth and you can continue with your normal routine.

Bin Kim, MS, DDS, PLLC will be happy to guide you through your many options for optimal oral health.
