Do I Have an Abscess?

The primary symptom of a gum or tooth abscess is a pain in and around the affected area. Other common symptoms of an abscess include:

  • Redness or swelling in the gums
  • Swelling in the face or jaw
  • Severe, prolonged pain
  • Prolonged sensitivity to pressure or temperature

Without treatment, the abscess will worsen, leading to more severe symptoms. Signs to look out for include fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting. The abscess may eventually rupture, causing bacteria to enter your bloodstream. If you experience any of the symptoms of a tooth or gum abscess, contact Weekend Dentistry right away for treatment.

At Weekend Dentistry, we specialize in urgent dental care. We offer same-day emergency treatment and can help you find relief from a painful tooth or gum abscess. Call us right away for the care you need.

What Causes an Abscess?

Patients may experience one of two types of abscesses: a gum abscess and a tooth abscess. A gum abscess is most often caused by a bacterial infection in the gum tissue. Gum abscesses may also form due to severe gum disease.

A tooth abscess may occur due to an infection of the dental pulp or nerve inside the tooth. As bacteria grow in the pulp chamber or root canals, the infection can spread to the tooth root and surrounding tissues.

How Is an Abscess Treated?

The treatment needed to treat your abscess will depend on the type and severity of your condition, but our expert team is here to help. To treat a gum abscess, we may make an incision in the abscess, drain it, and then treat the underlying infection with antibiotics. In cases of tooth abscess, we may recommend root canal treatment. We perform this treatment to remove the infected pulp and nerve, clean the inside of the tooth, and then seal it.

In cases of severe abscesses, we may recommend a tooth extraction to prevent the spread of infection to the surrounding healthy teeth and gums.
