What Are Dentures?

Dentures are one of the most common treatments for replacing lost teeth. While dentures can effectively restore the appearance and function of missing teeth, they can be vulnerable to damage. When damage occurs, it is important to have it repaired immediately. The team at Weekend Dentistry can help.

A variety of circumstances can cause damage to a denture. In many cases, our top-quality repairs can restore a fractured or damaged denture. Our knowledgeable and trusted team will advise you of the condition of your denture, the recommended repairs and any necessary steps to prevent further damage.

What Causes Damage to Dentures?

There are many reasons a denture can become damaged. One of the most common reasons is a poor fit. Keep in mind that dentures need to be replaced periodically as the jawbone changes. Generally, we recommend dentures are refitted approximately every seven years.

Other possible reasons for damage include:

  • Biting something that is too hard
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Improper care including dropping or falling

Can I Repair My Dentures Myself?

While denture repair kits are available, it is not recommended that you attempt any repairs on your own. This can make the damage worse and ultimately, cause harm to your oral health. In the event of any damage, contact us right away.

Avoiding Damaged Dentures

Taking proper care of your dentures is essential. Always handle your dentures with great care when you remove them. Brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste or soap and water. Do not bite or chew on anything very hard. Have your dentures examined regularly by a professional. If you notice anything different about your dentures, contact us right away.

When Should Dentures Be Repaired?

Denture damage can be sudden or occur over time. As soon as you notice something is not right, contact us immediately before further damage is done to the denture or to your mouth.

What Is Involved in Denture Repair?

The type of damage or wear and tear determines what’s involved in fixing your dentures. Small cracks may just need bonding. Rebasing may be recommended if the teeth portion of your denture is still in good condition. Rebasing is the process of replacing the acrylic base to provide a stable base. A rebase is similar to relining, which involves replacing the lining of the denture.
