What Are the Benefits of Mouth Guards?

A well-fitted mouth guard can protect your teeth, gums, tongue, lips and cheeks from trauma and injury. And in some cases, mouth guards can help reduce your risk of suffering severe injuries, including concussions or broken jawbones. Common sports-related injuries include:

  • Broken teeth
  • Broken tooth roots
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Cuts on the lips, gums, cheeks or tongue

Should I Get A Mouth Guard?

Mouth guards are required equipment in various contact sports such as boxing, ice hockey, field hockey, football and lacrosse. Doctors and dentists also recommend the use of mouth guards in a variety of sports and physical activities such as gymnastics or skating that could result in a hard fall or blow to the face. Mouth guards are recommended for children between the ages of seven and 11 to protect their developing teeth and jaws. For patients who wear braces or have dental restorations such as crowns or bridges, our dentist may recommend a guard to protect them.

If you or your child enjoy an active lifestyle, you understand the importance of athletic equipment. Be sure to protect your teeth against sports-related injury with custom-made mouth guards. For patients who suffer from bruxism (clenching or grinding the teeth during sleep), we also offer night guards.

Athletic Injury Prevention

Mouth guards are essential pieces of protective equipment for athletes of all ages and skill levels. If you or your child participate in contact sports or enjoy other physical activities, you should invest in a properly-fitted mouth guard. Mouth guards are protective appliances worn over your teeth. Made from durable, comfortable and tear-resistant material, mouth guards absorb the shock from blows to the face, hard falls, and other sports-related accidents.

Nighttime Bruxism Prevention

Do you suffer from headaches, jaw soreness, fatigue, face pain, or weakened or damaged teeth? Schedule an appointment with Weekend Dentistry and we will perform an examination to determine if you suffer from nighttime bruxism. This common condition involves grinding or clenching the teeth during sleep, causing painful breaking, chipping and wearing of your enamel. We offer custom-made night guards to protect your teeth from further damage.
