How Can I Treat a Toothache?

If you are suffering from a toothache, it’s important to see our team as soon as possible; however, in the meantime, there are several things that you can do at home to treat the pain.

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers including Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help.
  • Ice wrapped in a towel can help to alleviate pain and treat swelling.
  • Hydrogen peroxide rinses mixed with water can help reduce toothache pain. Just rinse and spit – do not swallow.
  • Saltwater rinses can help to clean out bacteria and treat inflammation.
  • Cold compresses can relieve pain by causing blood vessels to constrict.

What Causes a Toothache?

Toothaches have a wide variety of causes; some are serious, while others are easily treated. Some of the more common causes include:

  • Food stuck between your teeth
  • An internal infection
  • Dental decay
  • Injury or other damage
  • A damaged filling or other restoration

Dental Care for Toothache Relief

When you are suffering from tooth pain, it is always best to have your mouth examined by a professional. If you have an infection, it needs to be treated as soon as possible before it gets worse. Left untreated, an infection can lead to an abscess that can damage bone and enter the bloodstream. In most cases, a root canal treatment can treat this condition effectively and save your tooth. If you have decay, a cavity or other dental damage, you will also need treatment as soon as possible. We offer top-quality restorative care that can effectively treat virtually any dental damage.

Preventing Toothaches

Of course, the goal is to avoid toothaches in the first place. Brush at least twice a day, floss daily, and be sure to see us for a cleaning and exam at least twice a year. Avoid biting and chewing on hard items, and if you participate in contact sports or activities, be sure to use a mouth guard.
